Tivoli
København Rådhus (townhall) at sunset, taken from inside Tivoli.
Tonight Dorthe and I went to Tivoli for Dorthe's fathers birthday. Five of us went in total - Dorthe and I, Dorthe's mother, Gitte, her brother Morten, and of course, her father, Helmer. Tivoli is an old amusement park in the very centre of Copenhagen - it is one of the most well known things in town, and I would have to describe it as an amusement park in the sort of fairytale european style.
Tivoli has everything, from ultramodern rollercoasters, to your classic old school bumpercars, and everything in between. Morten, Dorthe and I got the "all rides" pass, and I have to say, we had a great night. The highlights for me were the Dæmon, the brand new modern rollercoast, that throws you around in every single direction at ridiculous speeds - great fun, and the Golden Tower. The golden tower is a Tivoli classic - its very simple in concept, just a tall vertical tower (perhaps 30m) tall, with a series of seats around the outside of it. You sit in the seats, and it slowly raises you up to the top. Fine. Then you sit there for about 30s or so, looking at the view of copenhagen. Hmm. Nice city. You can see that Rådhuspladsen, and all the way down Strøget and if you loo.... WHOOOMP! Next thing you know it accelerates you straight downwards, bloody fast, far faster than a simple freefall. Your stomach is left at the top of the tower - it happens so suddenly that its just like a bucket of cold water, you're left gasping after it every time. Very, very cool.
I don't know what it is about Tivoli, but I really like it - its just a nice park, and it seems very european - its the sort of thing that you know implicity from the movies and books, but until you actually go there, it doesn't make all that much sense. I think we all had a good a night really.
