Thesis progress
I just finished the last paragraph of Chapter 3, the Results and Discussion section. This is what I wrote:
Nevertheless, we must conclude that, in its current form, the TIRF-RET instrument is simply incapable of probing the time-scales required to successfully observe protein conformational change upon adsorption at the oil/water interface.
I have to say, there is something mighty satisfying about bucking the trend in science towards making everything sound great, and just coming out and saying that you work was, in fact, crap. It actually makes me feel quite happy about the whole thing. I'll leave it to the german with the crazy hair:
"If we knew what we were doing, it wouldn't be called research, would it?" - Albert Einstein.
Meanwhile, I am pleased to announce that the other scientist in the family, Dorthe, is positively rocking. I've managed to survive reading 75 pages of her thesis (forget the drugs: that stuff on cancer metabolism 'll do your head in!). Tonight we go to her lab and compile it all into one document. We print it on Wednesday. Bind it on Thursday morning. Hand it in on Thursday afternoon. And then we both catch up on some much need sleep!
P.S. It rained yesterday and the snow has all gone again. :-( Teds and I are both very sad about it.
